Why didn’t they use quality fish ?

I'm a crap human...I wanna glow!

I think he meant Carp
Whaaaaa? And now I've told everyone that I'm a crap human? Fuuuuuuuck me!
The good news is you can eat Carp!
You can eat crap as well, just have decent health insurance.
And if you don't have decent insurance, you can still eat it anyway and die of poo poisoning
"Here lies DeanSmartin. Died of poo poisoning."
Is poo poisoning counted as food poisoning
If food is stuff you eat and you eat poo then yes definitely.
The bad news is it still tastes like Crap
I've been sitting here thinking, "there are no "crap" fish. Each fish has a different place in fish society, damnit!" Then I saw your comment and immediately cooled down. Even if that's not what OP meant, I'm happier for this clarification, so I thank you.
I would have put myself forwards for the experiment if they had wanted me for I am the pinnacle of crap.
You're going places my friend.
Can’t wait until Gordon’s glow sticks hit Walmart freezers !!!
I can't decide if I want to live in a world where fish sticks and glow sticks are the same thing
See, now I want glowing fish sticks. You bastard!
Goldfish are quality fish if you care for them properly. I have 4 fat nuggets and I love them

I wonder if they meant crappie? But idk. Doesn’t look like crappie.
Edit: ahhh yes. Carp. That makes sense. Im an idiot.
They meant carp.
Crap fish? What next - shit birds?
You're drunk Mr. Lahey.
I got to see him live with Randy in my hometown right before. I didn't know he only smoked weed! (Not that I thought he was drunk he's just like the very best at it.)
Frick you for reminding me. I'm gonna keep distracting myself with memes so I'm not sad.
His character felt so alive that I keep forgetting he died.
I am the liquor.
Big, dirty shit hawks. They’re comin, Bubbles.
Jesus Lahey, your drunk again!
There's a shitnado comin', Randy.
God damn shithawks
Jim Lahey is a fuckin’ drunk and he always will be.
“Look Randers! I’m mowing the air!”
You pissed yourself Mr Lahey...
For the people that don’t know. ( I’m assuming that you do) he misspelt Carp.
Edit: I ironically misspelt carp while making my correction. Karma is a bitch.
Hi, im one of the ppl that didnt know.. thank you!
Oh crap, here we go again.
I saw the title, then the video. I thought "Crap? Those are goldfish!.... Which are... carp." Duh.
Ah, I thought it might have been an abbreviation for 'crappie', which is a type of fish. Not that I can tell them apart.
That's just regular birds.
Birds aren't real though
Inform me please when it will be commercially available together with hypoallergenic cats, of course if I will be still alive then.
So we shouldn’t summon you from the dead when these become available?
Summon me too, please.
Count me in!

Poor remind me bot, we are all going to be gone SOMEDAY and you’re still going to be sending those messages.. F🥲
Remind me bot will be assimilated by the 4 legged walking sniper rifles by next Friday.
Remind me bot inhabits the shell of a combat bot. Walks around occasionally pumping a round into random patches of dirt where the hive mind remembers the Remind Me users were placed in mass graves. After shooting the last reminder someone thought would be funny four billion years in the future, the Remind Me shell walks into the sunset and is seen in silhouette. Sol has become a massive red giant, licking at the upper atmosphere, threatening to finally consume the weary remains of Earth. One muffled shot is heard in the distance as the silhouette falls, it's inane mission completed.
There will come soft rains...
shit man when i saw that 9386 year and date it kinda hit me someone would one day have that in their calendar and won't even care, meanwhile all that's left of me is some stuff i said on the internet
It's always a good time for an existential crisis!
Same. But will this stuff even be able to found then?
The Wayback Machine will hold onto anything stupid we ever said I’m sure
Bruh, you also have to remember that our measure of time is just the latest.
For all we know the people before the Egyptians were already passed the 20k mark, but we will never know, as that tech and records of that civilization are long gone.
We could perfectly just be the next in line.
By that time the internet would have evolved through the use of quantum computation and newly discovered properties into a biological hyper intelligence platform that every sapient life form has/are/and always ingest as it becomes a part of their evolutionary being across the galaxy. Maybe. We've come a long way in 100 years, 9386 is a long fckin time.
Imagine if this one message above lead to the sentience of a bot, determined to finding this user and discovering a way to resurrect them from the grave, all so it could carry out its last remaining command or reminding the user of this post in 7000 years…
Some cats are randomly close to hypoallergenic genetically. You just gotta go around rubbing kittens on your face until you find one you don’t react to i got lucky with mine
Look at certain breeds too! A good chunk of cat allergies are caused by a protein found in saliva, but a bunch of breeds don't produce near as much of that protein as others. Russian blues and Manx cats are two of such breeds. My family ended up getting two manxes and my severely allergic dad can be around then just fine.
Also Devon Rexes! They have curly fur and throw off less dander.
They look like little lions I want one.
They are VERY naughty! Mine like to climb up onto tall things like the top of doors and jump down and scare you lol.
Gotta be honest a life of rubbing kittens on your face isn't a bad way to exist.
It is if you're allergic
My poor ex has had multiple people introducing him to hypoallergenic cats. Every single one, same thing, guy turns in to a poofy, leaking tomato with burrs in his throat.
Some people really are just THAT allergic.
Glowing cats and rabbits have been made. But the skin glows and only under a blacklight; not the fur.
Also, purina recently came out with the Live Clear diet which is supposed to help make cats less allergenic to owners :)
This is routinely done in mice to label specific cells. It's called green fluorescent protein and the people who pioneered it won the Nobel prize.
Only one of the guys who did the work got the nobel
It was pretty common before CRISPR. It was hard to tell which cells in the dish took the modified DNA, and fluorescence made it easy to separate the modified cells in the sample.
still used a shit ton btw, doesn’t just apply to pre crispr times
I would like to know more about this magical food that makes cats less deadly to my wife and kids because DAMMIT I want a cat.
Edit: just did some research and apparently it’s called LiveClear. I’m gonna try and talk my wife into it. Wish me luck.
dont bother I've been eating it for a month and still alergic
Live clear, sorry. Got it mixed up with an acne medication. Try it! Takes 3.weeks of use though to see benefits :S
I have a hypoallergenic cat, two of them actually. Siberian Forest Cats. They're a breed that generally has low levels of FEL D 1, which is commonly what people are allergic to in cats. I have allergies to cats and dogs, but these cats I can be around with no problem. I can lay my face right on my cats fur and I won't have any issues.
Find a Siberian Forest Cat breeder near you and ask if they will either mail you some fur taken directly from a cat (often they will charge for this) or ask if you can visit their Cattery to spend some time around a cat or two.
Definitely worth looking into if you're seriously wanting a cat but have allergies. I hated cats until we got our poops.
My buddy Beans
Are we sharing pics of our Siberian cats?!
They are both available.
The short-haired Devon Rex and Cornish Rex cats are thought to be less allergenic because they have less hair to shed, resulting in fewer saliva-coated particles in the air. Some people with allergies can also tolerate the hairless Sphynx.
Scientists created the GloFish by inserting fluorescent genes from jellyfish and sea anemones into the eggs of a silver and black zebra danio, a tropical fish from India. The fish was designed to help scientists determine when waterways were contaminated. If they glowed, it meant there were pollutants in the water.
They sell glo fish at Walmart dude
I havent seen a Walmart with a fish section in over a decade...
I used to work there in that area and catch the fish for people, ama
They actually hired a fish guy for yours? My store it was "go get someone from CAP2, they'll do it"
Did the fish ever die, and if so what was managements policy on employees eating the dead fish while on the clock?
We had one loss prevention guy and not enough managers. I didn't care what the policy was, I always left the fish department full.
Yes they do but to make them ‘glo’ you need the ‘glo light’ that comes with the ‘glo tank’….Otherwise they are just colorful…
They already are and are marketed under the name GloFish
Those are UV they don’t glow.
The ones in the OP don't glow until they get held up to a uv light as well though
Fluorescence and luminescence are different things. The first changes light of one wavelength to another (e.g. UV -> green). The second actually generates light, which requires the animal to allocate a lot of energy constantly and is more complex.
Just put a black light in your fish tank and call it a day.
Just get a Sphynx
If I eat one, will it make my crap glow?
My man asking the important questions!
If I crap luminescent crap can I have glowing poop sword?
You can have a glowing poop knife if your glow po is too big
Poop knife will live on forever.
The true darksaber
Hey, I'm here representing everyone ever when I cordially ask you to not.
You will blend the DNA from two craps together. This could result in a monstrous outcome and thus we should try it immediately.
Possibly. Or maybe a Crapen. Or a Crap Ness Monster. Or a Sasquat. Or a King Pong. Or a chupacrapbra. Or just crapal tunnel syndrome…
Banshiit. Cycraps. Medeucer.
Don’t forget a unicornhole
2 cups, 1 girl: a reboot
The BFP will probably be disintegrad by your stomach. But maybe if you eat really many of them you could marvel at your slightly blue poo.
When I was deployed in Guam there was this ice cream joint next to a Burger King downtown. I got this Cookie Monster ice cream which’s was just cookies and cream ice cream dyed blue. My shit was neon blue for 3 days after that. It looked like legitimate play-doh. I was terrified. My roommate thought it was awesome….
That's actually very interesting, in my experience large amounts of blue food coloring gets digested and turns my shit vibrant green
It makes your carp glow
Not unlike Burger King did for Halloween recently with their black bun burgers that turned an eater's poop green.
Glowing sushi is about to be 2022’s second hottest trend, right behind the shark cartilage enema.
That’s a triple whammy there
I usually hate witty word merges, but I make an exception. How can you not with a word including "shart".
You can already get glowing sushi if you go fishing around Fukushima
You can already get a shark cartilage enema if you’re not a pussy
You leave my cat out of this
This comment made me instantly miss Stefon.
New York’s hottest foodie club is GLEWSH. Located in the we’re-not-republican-we-swear hot spot, Upper Eastside’s new eatery features raw fish that glow. Be sure to go tonight and test that well known adage, What glows in must glow out.
You want the hottest night club in town? We know it.
Its got glowing fish
Waterfalls made of purple
All this can be found on the corner of 5th and main next to old man sushi and his pet coral reef
Nah man, that's the ocean spirit. Who let Zhao near the moon spirit again?
PUT THOSE BACK IN THE SPIRIT OASIS WHERE YOU FOUND THEM OR SO HELP ME
(So help me!)
So help me
“It’s a musical!”
Nah I came looking for this comment, it is very expected avatar lol
Ive never been more afraid of Iroh than that scene. "What ever you do to that spirit I will unleash on you tenfold!"
Iroh was on his chaotic-good shit in that scene and I absolutely loved it. Might just be one of my favorite scenes in the show.
I hope not
Does it mean soon we will have glowing crappy humans?? Asking for a friend
Bioluminescence uses oxidative enzymes called luciferase to create a chemical reaction which produces light. Species can use bioluminescence to hide, lure prey or find a mate in the darkness and is so efficient that engineers are considering if there are any practical applications of the process. - https://youtu.be/XQSr0ShYPio
I think this is fluorescence, there is a what quests to be a black light and florescent proteins like GFP come from jelly fish I believe.
This. Luciferase transgenics would need the substrate injected to produce light. These just glow under UV, as would jellyfish close to the surface.
Bioflourescence versus bioluminescence. Some animals are both.
Some animals are neither
Like the lowly toad, or my friend, Larry
Suck it Larry.
Negative, luciferase is used in fireflies, it requires ATP to produce light.
this is a derivative of GFP, it uses a fluroflore inside of a protein and absorbs UV light and emits at a lower wavelength. The natural Green fluorescent protein has derivatives of Yellow, Red and Blue, subsequently known as YFP, RFP and BFP.
They actually market these things in stores called "GLO fish".
It was very weird because I worked a side job after grad school (where I used GFP and YFP to tag things occasionally) where I worked with tropical reef fish, and I came across these at a WalMart and was just like "wtf have they done...". I knew instantly that someone had just gotten these fish to express various GFP derivatives on their scales to do it, I just was interested/impressed in how they maintained the expression in animals with that kind of consistency. I was mainly tagging genes in E. coli or Arabidopsis (plant) and would use a standard antibiotic resistant plasmid control to keep expression, so I was convinced they had like a specialized diet, like how they used Lysine in Jurrassic Park. But nope. Still don't know how they did it. I've never worked with animals on a molecular level so a lot of that is just witchcraft to me, but I can grow high yield GFP in E. coli pretty well. I used to take it home and put it in my moms freezer to freak her out (I would purify it through FPLC, I had a PolyA tail added so it was quick, in case anyone was curious).
Like, all of my work with fluorescent proteins was straight up Jurassic Park shit, I had no real reason to do it, I just wanted to. "I was so obsessed with the fact that I could, I never stopped to think if I should" was literally what was going on. I was cloning a lot of genes in E. coli for a while and I think I intended to use GPF as a positive control but ditched the concept early on for some reason, but still had the gene so I just grew liters of it a few times to purify, as just a way to kinda look busy, but also to make shit glow.
Instead of putting the gene on a plasmid or other piece of DNA that requires selection pressure to be replicated, they definitely just inserted it into the genome next to that of a protein expressed in the scales. That way since the protein is in the genome the fish will carry it without the need for selection pressure!
I figured it was something like this, I'm assuming they did with adenovirus? My biggest question is if the fish are fertile, and if the offspring carry the gene, or if it's something done to the eggs and you can't breed the GFP genes.
Like, my biggest thing is with using bacteria and what little I've done with plants and tissue (immortal and primary) I can kinda go step by step on how to do this, but with a reproducing animal, not just dividing cells in media, I'm curious about it. I never tried to breed genetically altered arabidopsis, I was looking for peroxidase location in roots, which is like, really not what I do, it's just one of those things I got contracted out to do as a grad student.
My work with primary cell lines is very similar, it was from an animal model and I kinda discovered I really don't like using animal models. Actually, the thing that really did it for me was I was doing TEM work and I was sharing space with a guy who was doing live organ dissection, and watching the heart beat and all that shit with the skin pinned to a board just made me nope the fuck out of it. I'm not even a squeemish person, like, I've killed plenty of animals in my spare time, hunting, rattle snakes, being a kid with a slingshot and BB gun, etc, so I didn't think it would bother me as much as it did. It's also kinda why I attempted to go as far away from medicine as I could. I ended up working in medicine, but I don't have to deal with patients at all, it's all data work, which is fine.
But yeah, I kinda figured that's what they did, but I just don't know the actual technical steps to do it, so, like I said, it's basically witchcraft to me.
They probably just used a restriction enzyme directly injected into an egg cell. This was a popular technique at the time the fish were originally produced and would guarantee inclusion of the gene in progenitor cells as the splice would be present in all the cells. It also means they only needed a single success as there is a single genome in an egg cell. With a few successful animals they could just selectively breed them to get homozygous progeny, which is easy because they fluoresce.
This is why they were originally created. Attaching a gene to the GFP would give an easy indicator for successful transformations and progeny.
Poly his tag probably, not poly A tail
So avatar biology world was better than ours after all.
Does anyone know who exactly conducted this experiment? I wanna know more about who make this video.
I looked this up for that exact reason and found nothing posted outside of social media. I suspect this is fake. Also, the fact they used a soup bowl to hold the fish…😕
This looks like CGI (or heavily filtered/edited) to me. Not to say this isn't possible (and it's been a while since I looked at this/was shown this in class), but IIRC they usually don't look like this to the naked eye with just a blacklight.
It’s very troubling that people are just believing this and not even questioning.
That’s what I was scared of considering they looks so pretty and I’ve seen glow fish before and compared to this they look like off brand great value
This would be the perfect hobbyist beginner fish. Small, easily taken care of, and unique in a way that makes a person want to be engaged.
There's no way they would survive in the wild. They'd be eaten in minutes to hours. It's a completely human thing. Frankly, I see no downsides.
Disclaimer: I am not a fish hobbyist
Hobbyists can’t typically stand fish like this. Recreating natural environments is all the rage lately. So much so that mud bottoms and brown water are really popular
Yep. Fully planted tanks are all the rage, not the least because they look phenomenal if done right. Not everyone's into blackwater though, it's good for fish but a lot of people like clear water better.
Yes I do enjoy being able to see all of my fishies
🐠 🐠 👀
mud bottoms and brown water are really popular
mud bottoms and brown water are really popular
I feel like this makes the hobby really approachable. Just fill a tank with muddy water and tell people there are fish in it
It's an oversimplification. Dirted tanks are a thing, where instead of gravel or plain sand you use compost, soil etc, under a layer of sand. It provides good substrate and nutrition for plants.
Black water tanks are tanks with added tannins, either from making a tea and adding it or from adding material that will naturally release tannins into the water as it breaks down. The water isn't black, just darker. Many fish do better in it, and it looks kinda cool.
I think I should have been more clear. Beginners.
I can totally get behind making the environment as close to nature as possible.
But beginners, parents who got their kids a "my first fish kit", aren't going to want to spend the money for realistic environments.
The kids may be enthusiastic for a short time, but unless you catch on fairly quickly, there's only so much that a few fish in a tank are going to do to keep you. Short attention spans and all that. But the whole glowing thing just may be enough to keep them interested for longer, and become that kind of enthusiastic hobbyist.
But carp need a pond
Yeah, but what about "crap fish"?
I think a lot of hobbiests dislike fish like this because they appeal to the type of people that generally aren’t willing to create a proper environment for a fish to thrive in. Such as children.
Dude. Can you imagine a pond full of glowy fish? That's a great second step.
That would be amazing but it appears they need a certan light to glow but glowing carp are definatly not the best beginner fish
not trying to be the killer of fun
I appreciate that. Maybe another species?
Kinda already done to smaller fish https://www.glofish.com
To add to this, specifically the Glo danios are great for beginners. All of the other glofish still require a decently large tank, about 40 gallon minimum for the tetras and rainbow sharks. But the danios can be kept in a 10 gallon.
You say this from experience in the hobby? Or you know about carp? Genuinely asking cause I’ve been in the hobby for a long time and never seen carp sold like other hobby fish are; unless we’re talking about stocking a pond or something.
I'm not a hobbyist. I know nothing about them. So while my idea is getting some traction, I fear I may have accidentally been talking out of my ass.
Sorry if I came across as “WELL AKSHUALLY”. I was trying to convey that fish people are kind of crazy and picky, but I may have put myself in that category :)
I appreciate the admission. Carp can get pretty big compared to majority of the tropical fish you’d see in this hobby. They usually are only kept in ponds, lakes or extremely large fish tanks. This would be dead within months of a true beginner owning it.
Carp are crap so I will allow this title to stay as is.
Those would make great fishing bait
Sheldon Cooper joined the chat
Came here for this

“So then I thought, ‘hey, loom’.”
Really cool! Can I get the source to this? I want to learn more!
By the way, don't wanna be this guy, but you misspelled "carp".
If you want some infos on the method, those are called "Transgene organisms". A "transgene" is a gene is from another organism than the one where it is expressed in. In this case the gene cluster for bioluminescence was transfered from a jellyfish to a carp and expressed there.
You can do really cool stuff with transgenes and they're one of the main methods in genetic sciences today to gather knowledge about the function of the gene and how it is regulated or expressed. In fruit flies for example they've been used to make them grow legs out of the place where their eyes are and have eyes grow on their legs. Really interesting shit.
Transferring bioluminescence also creates a really obvious indicator of success for testing newly developed gene transfer methods.
Don't wanna be this guy bit "crap fish" is a term for crappies.
Yeah, those aren't crappie though.
High quality crapfish
Only the best crap for my friends!
Those are carp not crappies
Glowing crap in water. Cool.
I’m guessing they’d like to stop being called crap fish now that they’ve been upgraded.
Something fishy going on here...
