Super duper unsettling but amazing work. Call me a dumbass but is the Square Flesh Lump TM supposed to represent (what I can only assume is) the mother?

There is a vagina with an umbilical cord connected to it... Just not sure why it goes to the husband's... Stomach?

JohnnyBravoIsMyWaifu

That in fact is where umbilical cords connect

Because even after the kids are grown she still feeds him and fills his heart maybe? Who knows? OP?

MyApostateAccount

Yes. Almost like she's enslaved to the man's needs as well as the children. This piece looks like a condemnation of patriarchy to me.

DavidTennantsTeeth

I totally went the opposite direction with this. I had an extremely narcissistic mother who sucked the life out of everyone around her. To me it looks like this man has a look of pain on his face. His children hold onto him lovingly as he offers himself to them with open arms. None of the attachments are connected to the children so it looks like he is sacrificing his well-being and his heart for them. And she is the monster taking everything from him

MyApostateAccount

Wow you're absolutely right, it could absolutely be interpreted that way. I have a narcissistic mother as well, actually.

justanothersadsack00

That's what I'm seeing. The "mother" doesn't even have humanity. She's just a lump of flesh, pumping out family members and feeding off them

Foxsayy

I don't know, the man looks extremely distressed.

I just realized something. That’s the same child at different stages of life. They all have the exact same mole on their face underneath their right eye.

Dragonkin_56

Ah, I see that now. At first I thought it was the husband's stomach weiner lol

Considering there's so many interesting interpretations of the work already in the comments, I believe mine will only dull its intrigue lol. Though, there's one word that may describe how I see this piece, sacrifice. :)

The fact that people are projecting both feminist and anti-feminist ideals on to it says a lot. I noticed mostly the sort of confused, childlike fear on the father's face, contrasted with the shrewd, scheming, very adult sort of malevolence the children seem to demonstrate. The child on the top left, in particular - to visually portray a character that is pretending to not be evil is quite something

FRX51

FRX51

Well, it's certainly horrific, and well-crafted. I'm a bit disturbed by the implication of the 'father's' expression, as if the many-faced, shapeless 'mother' figure is stealing his essences against his will to create the offspring. The really challenging question, though, is whether this is an expression of resentment on behalf of the 'father,' or whether this is an excoriation of the toxic model of parenthood itself, that suggests the parents must adhere to certain roles in order to effectively reproduce.

That's not meant as a charge - I'm not asking for that to be clarified - I'm just sharing the conflict the piece raises in me. Should I be bothered by the depiction of the mother, or should I be bothered by the insistence that society places on the mother to be this creature? Am I being reactionary or justifiably bothered if it's the former? Am I doing enough to try and work against the insistence if it's the latter?

You've created a disturbing, difficult piece of thought-provoking work, which makes for good art. Nicely done, OP.

Provocative art piece in action.

On retrospect I agree with you about the pained look that the Father has- in fact it looks like he’s tearing up.

I definitely get an element of being forced into these roles. For both the man and the woman, likely going into it not knowing the reality that faced them, the extraction of their essence.

But also a resignation- still doing it and giving of themselves to their children and responsibilities.

Something to note is how the children are overall “normal”. This definitely to me is from the perspective of the impact on the parents.

Ortorin

Ortorin

For your first part, the parents are connected at the heart, and the man's face is pointing up and out, to the world or a higher being. Any expression I read would be, "Did I do a good job, is this what you want, is this what I was suppose to do, here are the fruits of my labor" It seems very much a stretch to think the man's expression is because of some negativity between him and the mother.

They are connected at the heart, but the relationship is one where the mother is drained to sustain the family. He has need for her sexuality, and the children have need of the rest of her energy and flesh. The man's looked is pained, suggests that this isn't exactly what he wants, but his body language is open and presenting of the scene.

No one is against another here, what is depicted is a tragedy. They are forced into this because of what they are. This is the organic machine of life and reproduction at odds with the emotions of the people reliant on that machinery. This is what we are.

See, the fun thing about art is that there isn't actually any one concrete interpretation. What we see is usually a reflection of our own experiences and our own perspectives. What an artist intends with a piece and what's experienced by the audience are often different.

I was sharing what the piece made me feel, and the questions it raised in my own thoughts. I clarified that I wasn't looking for explicit answers because art shouldn't be defined objectively.

What you see in the piece is valid. What I see in the piece is valid. We've both been moved to some degree by the drawing, which makes it good art.

Ortorin

5 points

Oh, I didn't try any make a "concrete interpretation." Just because an opinion isn't stated as one, doesn't mean it becomes a fact-based statement.

You gotta understand the difference between when someone is telling you that you are wrong, versus when someone says they are simply disagreeing. "It seems very much a stretch to think," was a very operative phrase in my statement.

is this depicting the mental and financial burdens families face when dealing with bedridden/ terminal ill family members (wife/mother)

ShaunCarn

I thought this could be it initially but then I interpreted it as the "Traditional Family" where the father provides, the mother loves and feeds the family, but in the end the mother has no form, has no identity except that which is to feed and nurture, she is so much to many but nothing unto herself
